Library Education

I wanted to thank everyone who attended the podcasting classes in Greenville last Thursday. I appreciated all of the discussion and questions and will be sure to post FAQs to LibraryTrax as soon as all classes are finished. I have posted the PowerPoint slides as well as a sample handout to the Podcasting area of this blog. I have another handout I will try to post later this week. Both handouts can be revised and used by your libraries for future training. The remaining podcasting classes are this week (Florence - Tues; Columbia - Wed; Charleston - Thurs). I look forward to seeing some of you in those classes. Don’t forget to check out our Del.icio.us account too. Julie has been posting all kinds of great links there for all the classes! http://del.icio.us/techtracks. Have a great day!

Once again our neighbors to the north are providing the library community with concise information about staff development and training in today’s every changing environment.  The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklinburg County (PLCMC) is a leader on Web 2.0 and public service.  Take a look at the InfoToday article called: The C’s of Our Sea Change: Plans for Training Staff, from Core Competencies to LEARNING 2.0 by Helene Blowers and Lori Reed.

PLCMC has also invited neighboring libraries to their Rock to the Future session February 26, 2007.  Not only will you get great information, you will get to see the ImaginOn in Charlotte.  Speakers include George Needham is Vice President for Member Services at OCLC Online Computer Library Center and Patricia Martin is president and founder of LitLamp Communications Group.  Library Development Services staff attended last year’s session where they introduced 23 things to the PLCMC staff.  Michael Stevens and Michael Casey were the main speakers.  Make your plans today to go to the session, you will not be disappointed!

The tagging classes offered by the SC State Library are now completed but should not be forgotten.  :)  I have been adding great links to our del.icio.us account for everyone (including more examples of how libraries are using LibraryThing and Del.icio.us).  Check them out by clicking here and visit the tags under the “Tagging” bundle.  I will keep adding more as I find them.  Also, if you find great bookmarks, let me know by tagging them with “for:techtracks” and I will be sure to add them.I am working on scheduling the Flickr classes for April of 2007.  I will let everyone know soon.  Thanks everyone for participating, I had a great time with this class.  Hope to see you soon for the next round of classes.

Last evening I was with my husband at his department’s International Conference on Sport and Entertainment Business Conference awards banquet. You might ask why write about this in a library blog–because there are powerful things we can learn from all walks of life. The awards last night went to a number of people, but most notably Allan Bloom, Executive Vice President of Feld Productions (the Ringling Brothers, Walt Disney World on Ice, promoting concerts of the likes of Buddy Holly, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and Paul Anka); Wilson Howard President of Live Nation (Talent Promoter and management of seven amphitheatres in five states); and Chuck Fruit, Senior Advisor in Marketing, Strategy and Innovation for Coca-Cola.

What did I learn from these three very successful men is that they all had passion for their work and they developed very strong teams through loyalty and teamwork. Colleagues from all over America came to see these men receive their awards. So you ask, what does this have to do with libraries? In order to truly be successful in any profession you must have passion for your work and develop strong people around you to support your work goals and trust them to get the job done. Sometimes listening to best practices from another profession puts it all in perspective as to what is important.
